Governor Andrew W. Hockenhull

ANDREW W. HOCKENHULL was born near Bolivar, Missouri, on January 16, 1877. His education was attained at the Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, at the University of Missouri, from which he graduated in 1897, and at the University of Texas, where he earned an LL.B. degree in 1904. After establishing his legal career in Clovis, New Mexico, Hockenhull entered politics. From 1912 to 1916 he served as the assistant district attorney. He also served as the city attorney for Clovis for six years; and was the lieutenant governor of New Mexico from 1930 to 1933. On September 25, 1933 Governor Arthur Seligman died in office, and Hockenhull, who was the lieutenant governor at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. The devastating effects of the Great Depression consumed the majority of his term. After leaving the governorship, Hockenhull returned to his legal career. In 1939, he secured an appointment to serve as the postmaster of Clovis. Governor Andrew W. Hockenhull passed away on June 20, 1974.
