Matthew Paul Burnell, born on August 25, 1978, is an Australian politician and member of the Australian Labor Party. He is currently serving as a member of the Australian House of Representatives for the Division of Spence in South Australia, after being elected in the 2022 Australian federal election.
Born and raised in Mildura, Victoria, Burnell spent his early life on his family’s citrus farm. He later joined the Army Reserves and worked as a truck driver and seafarer before transitioning to union organizing. In 2016, he became a union organizer for the Transport Workers’ Union, where he developed a passion for advocating for workers’ rights and social justice.
Burnell resides in Hillbank with his wife, Cassandra.
