Representative Andrew Hastie
Andrew William Hastie was born on September 30, 1982, in Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia. He is the son of Sue and Peter Hastie. Sue is a primary school teacher for children with special needs, and Peter is a Presbyterian minister. Andrew has one older brother, David.
Andrew attended Ashbury Public School and The Scots College in Sydney. He graduated from The Scots College in 2000 with an ATAR of 99.95.
In 2001, Andrew began studying a Bachelor of Arts in History, Politics, and Philosophy at the University of New South Wales. He transferred to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in 2003, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Military and Strategic Studies in 2004.
After graduating from ADFA, Andrew was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Australian Army. He served as a troop commander in the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) from 2007 to 2015. During his time in the SASR, Andrew deployed to Afghanistan on three occasions.
In 2015, Andrew resigned from the Australian Army to contest the 2015 Canning by-election as a Liberal Party candidate. He won the by-election with 55.26% of the two-party-preferred vote.
