About Governor Beverley Randolph

Beverley Randolph was born in Chatsworth, Virginia and graduated from the College of William and Mary in Willamsburg in 1771. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1777 and from 1779-1781, and President of the Council of State of Virginia in 1783, 1786, 1787, and 1788. As President of the Council of State, he became acting governor when Edmund Randolph resigned. The first governor to serve after Virginia joined the Union, he was elected by the state legislature to three one-year terms, during which the District of Kentucky was organized into an independent state, the first census was taken, and the unanimous election of George Washington as President of the United States occurred. After leaving office, Randolph retired to his estate in Cumberland County, Virginia.
