About Samantha

My name is Samantha Severson, and I am running to be the representative for Arizona Congressional District 6.

I was born and raised in Arizona, and I am vitally interested in the issues that are key to Arizona, Tucson, and our beautiful but fragile Sonoran desert.

As the daughter of two career public educators and the product of public education, I believe a strong, fully-funded public education system is essential to maintaining our democratic republic. I possess a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University, and have strong public speaking and political science skills. I am also currently employed within higher education, and as a result of my experience, I keenly grasp the issues surrounding the weight of financial pressures placed upon our college students. Reform is needed to better prepare future generations for the world they will be living in.

As the wealthiest country in the world, we need a universal, affordable healthcare system available to everyone. I strongly support a person’s right to make decisions about their own body, and believe every person is entitled to privacy and autonomy.

Living in a desert environment has taught me we cannot ignore the signs around us. We must invest in renewable energy wherever and whenever possible and do it now. The continued reliance on finite resources is unsustainable. We must also secure everyone’s access to clean water throughout the United States

As a firm believer in the Constitution of the United States and our system of checks and balances, I will work to ensure that this government works for all Americans. I request your support in my campaign to strengthen and further develop our historic democratic republic, and build a better future for the people of Arizona and the United States of America.

Platform

There are many issues facing our country, and Samantha Severson will work every day to serve her constituents.

Economy

Severson is a pragmatic economic populist. Their economic agenda contains policy proposals that include plans to eliminate medical debts, a cap on prescription drug costs, and removing barriers to higher education through publicly funded state universities. Severson will introduce legislation to raise the federal minimum wage, ban hidden fees and late charges from financial institutions, and regulate rent increases.

Social Security

Severson stands for a robust and strengthened social security program and administration. Severson would work to raise or remove the FICA cap, therefore ensuring program solvency, and ensuring that adequate benefits would be paid up to a federally recognized level. Severson understands that seniors and the disabled are not burdens to our society, but should be revered and safe-guarded.

United States Government

Severson supports term limits for Supreme Court justices, as well as the members of Congress. She also will push to end stock trading among elected officials.

Citizens United

Severson supports the overturning of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Citizens United, and establishing public funding for elections. The United States Government was established to work for and protect its citizens, not to be a lucrative cash cow for elected officials.

2SLGBTQIA+ Rights

Severson denounces all legislative attacks on transgender rights in states across the country. There are an estimated 1.6 million transgender and non-binary people living in the United States. As one of the smallest, most marginalized groups in the country, they deserve equitable human rights protection. This will also be included in the legislation Severson plans to introduce protecting bodily autonomy and privacy.

Housing

While in Congress, Severson will fight to enforce fair housing laws and will work to pass legislation that will prevent property owners from using services that coordinate rents, thereby increasing housing costs beyond the average American threshold. She supports Senate bill S.2224 - Stop Predatory Investing Act, which proposes to remove tax benefits for Wall Street firms that buy up large numbers of single-family homes. She will work for fair housing laws for all Americans because 26 states have discriminatory bills against LGBTQ living in particular areas

Immigration

As a born and raised Arizonan, Severson advocates for comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship. Severson was a vocal supporter of the bipartisan bill H.R.2 - Secure the Border Act, which would have funded additional border agents and closed the border if too crowded. The system is broken and needs to be fixed, and Severson will take up the mantle to fight for the rights of all people, regardless of their immigration status, and will ensure laws about asylum seekers are enforced.

Healthcare

Studies have found that our federal government could save up to $500 billion per year on administrative costs by moving to a Medicare for All, single-payer health care system. As the wealthiest country in the world, Medicare for All would guarantee high quality, affordable health care as a right, not a privilege, to every man, woman, and child in this country.

Civil Rights

Severson would reintroduce the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. She supports demilitarizing police departments, and would support legislation to restore the public’s trust in police through progressive training.

Climate Change and Energy

Severson is a staunch advocate for environmental justice to address the impact of climate change. The Severson campaign does not support a ban on fracking, but will work toward renewable energy infrastructure to create a better future for generations to come.

Artificial Intelligence

While there is a potential future benefit of Artificial Intelligence, it needs to be regulated to ensure finite resources are not stolen from the people.

Cannabis

Severson supports removing Cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act.
