About Governor Clifford P. Hansen



CLIFFORD P. HANSEN was born in Zenith, Teton (then Lincoln) County, Wyoming, on October 16, 1912. His family were pioneers who homesteaded and settled in the Jackson Hole area. Hansen completed his education at the University of Wyoming and graduated in 1934. Elected to the State Senate in 1937, he later became a member and president of the University of Wyoming Board of Trustees. He also served as an officer of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, the American National Cattlemen’s Association, and the Livestock Research and Marketing Advisory Committee; Columbia Interstate Compact commissioner; Snake River Compact commissioner; and Teton County commissioner 1943-1951. He was elected Governor of Wyoming in 1963. During his tenure, he served on the National Governors’ Conference Executive Committee from 1965 to 1966. Hansen was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1966 and reelected in 1972. He resigned in December 1978. Hansen died at his home in Jackson in October 2009.
