Governor Daniel Rogers

DANIEL ROGERS, Delaware’s third governor, was born in Pungoteague, Accomack County, Virginia, on January 3, 1754. Before entering politics, Rogers was a miller and extensive landowner. He was a member of the Delaware State Senate and also served as the senate’s president. On September 28, 1797 Governor Gunning Bedford died in office, and Rogers, who was president of the senate at the time, assumed the duties of Delaware’s governorship. During his tenure, he continued to implement the agenda and policies of former Governor Bedford’s administration. Rogers served in the Delaware State Senate from 1801 until his death on February 2, 1806 and was Speaker of the Senate all 6 years. Rogers left office on February 2, 1806, and retired from public service. Governor Daniel Rogers died on February 2, 1806, at the age of 52. He is buried at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Milford, Delaware.
