About Governor Edward Peter Carville



EDWARD P. CARVILLE, the eighteenth governor of Nevada, was born in Mound Valley, Nevada, on May 14, 1885. His education was attained at Notre Dame University, where he earned his law degree in 1909. After being admitted to the bar, Carville established a successful legal practice in Elko. He was appointed Deputy District Attorney in 1910 to 1911. He first entered politics as the district attorney of Elko County, a position he held from 1912 to 1918. He also was the district judge of Elko County from 1928 to 1934, and served as the U.S. attorney for Nevada from 1934 to 1938. Carville next secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by a popular vote in November 1938. He was reelected to a second term in 1942. During his tenure, World War II issues were addressed and economy and good government promoted. Carville resigned from the governorship on July 24, 1945 when appointed to the U.S. Senate, a position he held until January 3, 1947. He subsequently practiced law in Reno. Governor Edward P. Carville passed away on June 27, 1956, and was buried in the Nevada Memorial Park Mausoleum in Reno, Nevada.
