About Governor Eli C. D. Shortridge
ELI C. D. SHORTRIDGE, the third governor of North Dakota, was born in Cabell County, West Virginia on March 29, 1830. His education was attained in the public schools of Monroe County, Missouri, where his family migrated to in 1833. Shortly after moving to Larimore, North Dakota, Shortridge entered into politics. He first secured the Populist gubernatorial nomination, and then was elected governor by a popular vote on November 8, 1892. During his tenure, a general drainage bill was sanctioned; funding was granted for the construction of a south wing of the capitol; and a commission was organized to revise state laws. After completing his term, Shortridge served as clerk of the United States Land Office. Governor Eli C.D. Shortridge passed away on February 4, 1908.
