Representative Eugene Pierce Gillespie

Eugene Pierce Gillespie (September 24, 1852 – December 16, 1899) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. He was born in Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where he spent his early years. Raised in western Pennsylvania, he attended the local public schools, laying the foundation for a career that would combine legal practice with public service.

Gillespie pursued higher education at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, an institution known for its liberal arts curriculum and regional prominence in the mid-19th century. He furthered his studies at St. Michael’s College in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, reflecting a breadth of academic experience unusual for many American politicians of his era. This combination of American and Canadian collegiate education provided him with a broad intellectual background before he turned to the study of law.

After completing his formal education, Gillespie studied law and was admitted to the bar in August 1874. He commenced the practice of law in his hometown of Greenville, Pennsylvania. Gillespie was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
