He represented Pennsylvania’s 4th congressional district, first as an Anti-Mason and then as a Whig, serving in the 26th and 27th Congresses.
Early Life and Education
James was born on April 4, 1799, in Thornbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He attended local schools and Gauses’ Academy before studying law. He was admitted to the Chester County bar in May 1825 and established a legal practice in West Chester, Pennsylvania. On September 7, 1826, he married Sarah H. James.
Political Career
James entered public service through the Pennsylvania State Senate, representing the 4th district from 1835 to 1836 and the 3rd district from 1837 to 1838. His legislative experience and legal background positioned him for a successful bid for national office.
Congressional Career
James was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the 26th Congress and was reelected as a Whig to the 27th Congress, serving from March 4, 1839, to March 3, 1843.
