About Governor Frank Darr Jackson
FRANK D. JACKSON, Iowa’s fifteenth governor, was born in Arcade, New York on January 26, 1854. After attending Iowa Agricultural College, Jackson studied law at Iowa University Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1875, and then established a legal practice in Greene, Iowa. Jackson entered public service, serving as secretary of the Iowa State Senate. He also served as Iowa’s secretary of state from 1885 to 1891. Jackson won the 1893 Republican gubernatorial nomination and was sworn into the governor’s office on January 11, 1894. During his tenure, he worked towards securing additional funding for the management of state agencies, and he endorsed controlling liquor sales through the local option bill, which became the Mulct law in 1895. Jackson did not seek reelection and retired from politics. Before retiring to California, he served as president of the Royal Union Life Insurance Company. Governor Frank D. Jackson died in Redlands, California on November 16, 1938.
