Representative Gene Taylor

Gene Taylor (full name William Eugene Taylor) was an American businessman and politician who served as a Republican Representative from Missouri in the United States Congress from 1973 to 1989. Born on January 24, 1928, in Sarcoxie, Jasper County, Missouri, he became known for his long tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he contributed to the legislative process during eight consecutive terms in office and represented the interests of his constituents during a significant period in American history.

Taylor grew up in southwest Missouri, where he attended the public schools of Sarcoxie. After completing his early education, he entered the United States Navy near the end of World War II, serving from 1945 to 1946. Following his military service, he returned to Missouri and pursued business interests that would form the foundation of his later public career. After his naval service, Taylor became active in the business community, particularly in the automotive industry. Taylor was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972 as a Republican from Missouri, taking office on January 3, 1973. He represented Missouri’s 7th Congressional District, based in the southwest portion of the state, and was subsequently reelected seven times, serving until January 3, 1989. During his eight terms in Congress, he participated actively in the democratic process, working on legislation and committee assignments that reflected both national priorities and the specific needs of his district.
