About Governor George Hoadly

GEORGE HOADLY, the thirty-sixth governor of Ohio, was born in New Haven, Connecticut on July 31, 1826. His education was attained at Western Reserve College and at Harvard University, where he studied law for one year. After establishing a legal practice in Cincinnati, Hoadly entered into a career as a public servant. He first served on the Cincinnati Superior Court bench, a position he won election to in 1851, 1859 and 1864. He also served as the city solicitor of Cincinnati from 1855 to 1859. Hoadly next secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and was elected governor by a popular vote in the 1883 general election. During his tenure, a coal strike and a courthouse riot were both dealt with. After running unsuccessfully for reelection, Hoadly retired from political life. In 1887 he moved to New York, where he continued to stay active in his legal career. Governor George Hoadly passed away on August 26, 1902 and was buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
