About Governor Henry Stewart Caulfield



HENRY S. CAULFIELD was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 9, 1873. His education was attained at St. Charles College, and at Washington University, where he earned a law degree in 1895. After establishing his legal career in St. Louis, Caulfield entered into politics. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1907 to 1909, and was a St. Louis excise commissioner from 1909 to 1910. He also served on the bench of the St. Louis Court of Appeals from 1910 to 1912, was the city counselor of St. Louis from 1921 to 1922, and served as the chairman of the Board of Freeholders of St. Louis in 1925 and 1926. Caulfield next secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor in November 1928. He was sworn into office on January 14, 1929. During his tenure, the state department of agriculture was organized; state agencies were restructured and consolidated; the Missouri highway patrol was established; and benefits for the aged were initiated. After completing his term, Caulfield left office on January 9, 1933. From 1941 to 1949, he served as the director of public welfare in St. Louis, and later was a member of the state reorganization commission. Governor Henry S. Caulfield passed away on May 11, 1966, and was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Louis.
