James Manahan (March 12, 1866 – January 8, 1932) was an American attorney and politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Minnesota from 1913 to 1915. A member of the Republican Party, he represented Minnesota at large in the 63rd Congress.

Early Life and Education

Manahan was born on March 12, 1866, near Chatfield in Fillmore County, Minnesota, to Irish immigrant parents. He attended local schools before graduating from the Normal School in Winona, Minnesota, in 1886. After teaching school in Graceville, Minnesota, for two years, he pursued a legal education, first attending the University of Wisconsin Law School and then earning his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1889. He was admitted to the bar that same year.

After being admitted to the bar, Manahan practiced law in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1895, he relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, before returning to Minnesota in 1905, settling in Minneapolis. He built a reputation as a capable attorney and became involved in progressive Republican politics, advocating for reform causes that resonated with his rural Minnesota constituency.

Congressional Career

Manahan was elected as a Republican to the 63rd Congress, serving from March 4, 1913, to March 3, 1915. He represented the state at large during a period of significant progressive reform at both the state and national levels. He declined renomination in 1914, choosing to return to private life after one term.

Later Career and Death

After leaving Congress, Manahan remained active in Minnesota politics. He served as a legal advisor to the Nonpartisan League, a political organization that advocated for the interests of farmers and rural communities in the Upper Midwest. James Manahan died on January 8, 1932, in St. Paul, Minnesota.
