About Governor John Isaac Moore

JOHN ISAAC “IKE” MOORE was born in Lafayette County, Mississippi, on February 7, 1856. He graduated from Arkansas Industrial University (now the University of Arkansas) in 1881, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1882. Moore entered politics in 1882, when he was elected to serve in the Arkansas House of Representatives. He was reelected in 1900 and served in 1901, and in 1903 he served as speaker of the house. He also served as probate judge in Phillips County from 1894 to 1900. In 1904 he was elected to the Arkansas Senate, serving terms in 1905, 1907, 1913, and 1915. On February 11, 1907, Governor John S. Little resigned from office due to mental and physical illness, and John Isaac Moore, who was president of the senate at the time, became acting governor. He served in this capacity until the adjournment of the legislature on May 14, 1907. Moore later served as a member of the Arkansas Board of State Capital Commissioners and as a member of the 1917-1918 Constitutional Convention. John Isaac Moore died on March 18, 1937.
