About Representative Jonas Hartzell McGowan

Jonas Hartzell McGowan (born April 2, 1837) was a Republican politician who represented Michigan in the United States House of Representatives during the late nineteenth century. Serving as a member of Congress from Michigan’s 3rd District, he held office as a Representative from October 15, 1877, to March 3, 1881. Over the course of his congressional service, McGowan completed two terms in the House.

During his tenure, McGowan served as a historical member of Congress from Michigan at a time when the Republican Party was a dominant force in national politics. Although specific committee assignments, legislative initiatives, and additional offices are not recorded in the available information, his service from 1877 to 1881 places him among the post–Civil War generation of lawmakers who helped shape federal policy in the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction era. McGowan left office as a former member of Congress after March 3, 1881.
