JOSEPH C. YATES, the eighth governor of New York, was born in Schenectady, New York on November 9, 1768. His early education was attained in the common schools of his native state. He went on to study law, and then established his legal career in his hometown of Schenectady. Yates first entered politics as mayor of Schenectady, a position he held from 1798 to 1808. He also served as a member of the New York State Senate from 1805 to 1808; and was a New York Supreme Court justice from 1808 to 1822. He next won election to the governorship on November 6, 1822, and was sworn into office on January 1, 1823. During his tenure, new constitutional amendments were initiated in administrative areas; and the popular election of electors was contested. After completing his term, Yates retired from political life. Governor Joseph C. Yates passed away on March 19, 1837 in Schenectady, New York.
