Representative Lewis Philip Ohliger

Lewis Philip Ohliger (January 3, 1843 – January 9, 1923) was an American politician and businessman who briefly served as a U.S. Representative from Ohio from 1892 to 1893. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented an Ohio district in the U.S. House of Representatives during a significant period in American history, participating in the legislative process and the broader democratic system while advocating for the interests of his constituents.

Ohliger was born on January 3, 1843, in Rheinpfalz, then part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in what is now Germany. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1854, when he was still a boy. The family settled in Canton, Ohio, where he grew up amid the expanding industrial and commercial life of the mid-nineteenth-century Midwest. His early years in Ohio were shaped by the experience of adapting to a new country and culture, an experience common to many German immigrants of his generation.

Ohliger attended the public schools in Canton, receiving a basic education that prepared him for a career in business. As a young man, he moved to Wooster, Ohio, where he entered the drug business. Over time he became a successful druggist and businessman, establishing himself as a respected member of the local commercial community. His business activities provided him with practical experience in finance, trade, and local affairs, and helped lay the foundation for his later involvement in public service and politics.

Before entering Congress, Ohliger held several positions of trust and responsibility at the local and federal levels. He served as postmaster of Wooster, Ohio, a role that placed him at the center of communications and civic life in the community. His performance in this federal appointment enhanced his standing within the Democratic Party and among local voters.
