About Governor Maggie Hassan



Maggie Hassan was sworn in as governor of New Hampshire on January 3, 2013, and was sworn in for her second term on January 7, 2015.

Hassan was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a juris doctor from the Northeastern School of Law. Hassan began her career in public service in 1999 when Governor Jeanne Shaheen asked her to serve as an advocate on the Advisory Committee to the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission.

In 2004, Hassan was first elected to the New Hampshire Senate. During her six years in office, she was selected by her colleagues to serve as both President Pro Tempore and Majority Leader of the State Senate. She was chair of the Commerce Committee, Capital Budget Committee and the Public and Municipal Affairs Committee and also served on the Finance Committee and as vice chair of the committee on Energy, Environment and Economic Development.

On January 3, 2017, Hassan was sworn in to serve as a U.S senator for New Hampshire.

Hassan lives in Exeter with her husband Tom and has two adult children, Ben and Meg.
