About Governor Martin James Schreiber

MARTIN JAMES SCHREIBER was born April 8, 1939, in Milwaukee. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Valparaiso University and he received a law degree from the Marquette University Law School in 1964. Schreiber served in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1962 to 1970. Elected at the age of 23, Schreiber was the youngest senator in Wisconsin history. While there, he was Democratic caucus chair for the 1967 and 1969 sessions. In 1970 he was elected lieutenant governor and he was reelected in 1974. As lieutenant governor, Schreiber was particularly concerned about conditions in nursing homes. In 1977, he became governor to complete the term of Governor Lucey when the latter was appointed ambassador to Mexico. Acting Governor Schreiber was well known for his rapport with children. After completing Governor Lucey’s term, Schreiber opened a private law practice and government relations firm.
