He became music director of The Florida Orchestra, based in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, as of the 2015–2016 season, initially under a three-year contract. His leadership there included expanding programming, community engagement, and artistic initiatives. His contract was subsequently extended to keep him with The Florida Orchestra through 2025, and in February 2024 it was announced that he had received a further extension, ensuring his tenure through at least the 2029–2030 season. In the summer of 2015, he also assumed the role of music director of the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego, California, where he has overseen performances focused on the Classical repertoire, particularly the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In his later life and ongoing career, Michael Francis has continued to balance his European and American commitments, maintaining a presence on both continents as a guest and principal conductor. He resides in Florida with his American wife, Cindy, and their daughter, from where he manages his responsibilities with The Florida Orchestra, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, and the Mainly Mozart Festival.
