Current New Jersey Leadership

In November 2025, New Jersey elected Mikie Sherrill as the state’s next Governor, making history as the first woman to serve in this role. Governor-elect Sherrill, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Navy helicopter pilot, former federal prosecutor, and U.S. Representative for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, will take office in January 2026. Her election represents New Jersey’s choice for experienced leadership in national security, public safety, and fighting for working families across the Garden State.

New Jersey is currently represented in the U.S. Senate by Cory Booker and Andy Kim, both Democrats who bring diverse perspectives and strong advocacy for New Jersey’s interests in Washington, D.C.

New Jersey’s Historic Political Legacy

New Jersey became the third state to join the Union on December 18, 1787. New Jersey’s first two senators, Jonathan Elmer and William Paterson, took office on March 4, 1789. The state’s longest-serving senators include Clifford Case (1955–1979) and Frank Lautenberg (1982–2001; 2003–2013). Among those who rose to leadership positions are Samuel Southard, who served as the Senate’s president pro tempore, and Robert Torricelli, Jon Corzine, and Robert Menendez, all of whom served as chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Charles P. McIlvaine (son of Senator Joseph McIlvaine) served as Senate chaplain, 1821–1822.

New Jersey has played a pivotal role in American political history, from its early ratification of the Constitution to its modern leadership in progressive policies. The state has been home to influential political figures and has consistently been at the forefront of national political movements, reflecting its diverse population and strategic position in the Northeast corridor.
