About Governor Patrick Joseph Lucey



PATRICK JOSEPH LUCEY was born March 21, 1918, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1946. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army in the Caribbean Theatre of World War II, from 1941 to 1945. Lucey was a justice of the peace from 1946 to 1950, a member of the state assembly from 1949 to 1951, and lieutenant governor from 1965 to 1967. He was elected governor in 1970 and reelected in 1974. He was a member of the National Governors’ Conference Executive Committee from 1973 to 1974. He resigned as governor in 1977 to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, a position he held until 1979. He was the Independent candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1980. He retired from political life after that campaign and began teaching political science and working as a private consultant for Madison Consulting Group, National Economic Research Associates, and Anderson, Benjamin, Read, and Haney.
