RICHARD H. VOSE, the fourteenth governor of Maine, was born in Augusta, Maine on November 8, 1803. His education was attained at Bowdoin College, where he graduated from in 1822. He studied law, and established successful legal practices in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Augusta, Maine. Vose entered politics in 1824, serving as a member of the Maine House of Representatives, a position he held again in 1835, 1838 and 1839. He also served as a member of the Maine State Senate from 1840 to 1841, and was president of the senate in 1841. On January 12, 1841, Governor John Fairfield resigned from office, and Vose, who was president of the senate at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. He served in this capacity until January 13, 1841, when the new governor elect, Edward Kent took office. Vose returned to his senatorial seat and finished out his term. He later served as the county attorney for Kennebec from 1848 to 1856. Governor Richard H. Vose passed away on January 19, 1864.
