About Governor Robert John Reynolds

ROBERT JOHN REYNOLDS, Delaware’s 39th governor, was born in Smyrna, Kent County, Delaware, on March 17, 1838. After settling in Petersburg, Delaware in 1861, he became a farmer with an interest in horticulture. Reynolds entered politics in 1869 as a member of the Delaware General Assembly, a position he held one term. He also served as Delaware’s state treasurer in 1879 and 1881. On November 4, 1890, he was elected governor of Delaware, and on January 20, 1891, he was sworn into office. During his tenure, the legislature sanctioned a constitutional amendment that gave the people of Delaware the right to vote on whether to summon a constitutional convention. Also, the installation of a new boundary line between Delaware and Pennsylvania was formed, and an inland channel was created between Lewes. Reynolds left office on January 15, 1895, and retired from public service. He continued to stay active in his farming interests. Governor Robert J. Reynolds died on June 10, 1909, and is buried at the Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
