About Governor Robert N. Haskell

ROBERT N. HASKELL, the sixty-third governor of Maine, was born in Bangor, Maine on August 24, 1904. His education was attained at the University of Maine, where he earned his engineering degree in 1925. Haskell established a successful career at the Bangor Hydro-Electric Company, becoming the company’s president in 1958. He entered politics in 1945, serving as a member of the Maine House of Representatives, a position he held until 1947. He also served as a five-term member of the Maine State Senate, serving two terms as president and two terms as senate majority leader. On January 2, 1959, Governor Edmund S. Muskie resigned from office, and Haskell, who was president of the senate at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. He served in this capacity for five days. Haskell retired from politics, but stayed active, serving as a trustee for the University of Maine. He also served as board chairman of the Bangor Merchants National Bank, and was the chief executive officer of the Bangor Hydro-Electric Company. Governor Robert N. Haskell passed away on December 3, 1987.
