Robert Hunter Nugen (July 16, 1809 – February 28, 1872) was an American farmer, contractor, and politician who served as a Democratic U.S. Representative from Ohio.
Early Life
Nugen was born near Hallidays Cove, Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1811, he moved to Ohio with his parents, who settled in Columbiana County. He received a limited education and moved to Tuscarawas County in 1828, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits and worked as a contractor. He held several local offices.
Congressional Career
Nugen was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention at Charleston in 1860. He was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving from March 4, 1861, to March 3, 1863.
Later Life and Death
After leaving Congress, Nugen served as superintendent of the Ohio Canal until his death in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on February 28, 1872. He was interred in Newcomerstown Cemetery.
