About Representative Samuel Feiser Glatfelter

Samuel Feiser Glatfelter (April 7, 1858 – April 23, 1927) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania who served one term in Congress from 1923 to 1925. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented his constituents during a significant period in American history, contributing to the legislative process in the Sixty-eighth Congress.

Glatfelter was born on April 7, 1858, near Loganville, York County, Pennsylvania. He was educated in local institutions, attending the York County Academy and then Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (now Gettysburg College). His early life in rural Pennsylvania and his formal education in the region helped shape his later professional and political pursuits.

Before entering national politics, Glatfelter pursued a career in education and business. He was engaged in teaching for several years, reflecting an early commitment to public service and community development. After his period as a teacher, he became a building contractor, establishing himself in the construction field. In addition to his work as a contractor, he was also interested in banking, expanding his activities into the financial sector and becoming a figure of some local economic influence.

Glatfelter’s political career reached its peak with his election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Running as a Democrat, he was elected to the Sixty-eighth Congress and served from 1923 to 1925 as a Representative from Pennsylvania. In that election he defeated three other candidates, including prominent Republican businessman Mahlon Haines. During his single term in the House of Representatives, he participated in the democratic process and represented the interests of his Pennsylvania constituents at the national level. His service in Congress took place during a transitional era in the early 1920s, when the United States was adjusting to post–World War I conditions and evolving domestic and economic policies.

After completing his term, Glatfelter was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1924. Following this electoral defeat, he returned to private life and resumed his business as a building contractor. He continued his involvement in local economic affairs, maintaining his role in the community through his construction activities and his ongoing interest in banking.

Samuel Feiser Glatfelter died in York, Pennsylvania, on April 23, 1927, at the age of 69. According to the coroner’s records, the cause of death was carcinoma of the intestines. He was survived by his wife, Ida A. Glatfelter. He was interred in Prospect Hill Cemetery in York, a resting place for many of the region’s notable citizens. Following his death, various properties and lots of land that he owned were sold or auctioned off on September 22, 1927, reflecting the extent of his real estate and business holdings at the time of his passing.
