Senator Marilyn Dondero Loop
Marilyn Dondero Loop, born in 1951 in Las Vegas, Nevada, is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Nevada Senate. She has been representing District 8 since November 2018. Before her tenure in the Senate, she was a member of the Nevada Assembly from 2008 to 2014, representing District 5.
Education has played a significant role in Marilyn’s life. She is a product of Nevada’s K-12 public education and higher education systems. She graduated from Las Vegas High School and went on to receive her B.S. in Elementary Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where she was a Rebel cheerleader. She furthered her education at UNLV, earning her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction.
Her professional experience includes working in textbook publishing and as an elementary school teacher. This background in education has undoubtedly influenced her political career and the causes she champions.
In the 2008 elections, when Republican Assemblywoman Valerie Weber left the Assembly and left the District 5 seat open, Marilyn was unopposed for the Democratic Primary and won the three-way General election with 51.40% of the votes. She was re-elected in 2010 and 2012, winning 54.09% and 51.31% of the votes respectively.
In 2018, Marilyn ran for the Nevada State Senate to represent District 8. She won the general election on November 8, 2022, securing 50.7% of the votes. Her current term ends on November 4, 2026.
Throughout her political career, Marilyn has served on various committees. In the 2023-2024 tenure, she was assigned to the Finance Committee as Chair and the Senate Judiciary Committee. In the 2021-2022 tenure, she served as Vice chair of the Senate Education Committee, Chair of the Finance Committee, and Chair of the Senate Government Affairs Committee. In the 2019-2020 tenure, she served as Vice chair of the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee, Chair of the Revenue and Economic Development Committee, and was a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
