Donnie Chesteen, a member of the Republican Party, is a representative in the Alabama State Senate for District 29. He assumed office on November 7, 2018, and his current term is set to end on November 4, 2026. Prior to his tenure in the State Senate, Chesteen served in the Alabama House of Representatives for District 87.

Chesteen was born on August 27, 1953, and is a lifelong resident of Geneva County. He is a graduate of Geneva County High School in Hartford. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physical Education from Troy University.

Before entering politics, Chesteen had a diverse professional background. He worked as a teacher, a football coach, and an athletic director at the high school level. He also worked as a medical sales representative for Mead Johnson. His father, James Donald “J.D.” Chesteen, was also a high school football coach and educator, and is a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Sports Hall of Fame.

Throughout his political career, Chesteen has been assigned to various committees. For the 2023-2024 term, he serves on the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee, the Banking and Insurance Committee, the Senate Education Policy Committee (as Vice Chair), the Finance and Taxation Education Committee, the Healthcare Committee, the Transportation and Energy Committee, the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, and the Children First Trust Fund Legislative Oversight Committee.

Chesteen ran for re-election to the Alabama State Senate to represent District 29 and won in the general election on November 8, 2022. His base salary as a legislator is $53,913 per year.
