Representative Kelvin Datcher

Kelvin Datcher is a dedicated public servant and a prominent figure in Alabama politics. He currently serves as a Democratic member of the Alabama House of Representatives, representing District 52. Datcher assumed office on October 2, 2024, after winning a special election held on October 1, 2024. His district includes parts of Birmingham, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and sections of Fairfield and Homewood.

Datcher’s journey into politics is marked by a strong commitment to community service and advocacy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Gettysburg College in 1992. His career includes serving as the director of teaching tolerance at the Southern Poverty Law Center, a sports information director at Alabama State University, and an administrative/policy analyst for the Jefferson County Department of Health.

He served as the chief of staff to the city councilmember for District Six of the Birmingham City Council and as the director of development for REV Birmingham. His efforts in affordable housing and community development include supporting home ownership funding initiatives, leveraging tax credits to create pathways to home ownership for families, and increasing public transportation funding.

Datcher’s dedication to his community extends beyond his professional and political roles. He has served in leadership positions in various organizations, including the Birmingham Zoo, 100 Black Men of Birmingham, and Sardis Missionary Baptist Church, where he is a deacon. He is also a volunteer coach, tutor, and mentor for young people, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders.
