Representative Sam Jones
Samuel Leon Jones, born on April 14, 1947, is an American politician who is currently serving as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives, representing District 99. He assumed office on November 7, 2018, and his current term is set to end on November 4, 2026.
Jones was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, and graduated from Central High School. He furthered his education at Florida Junior College and Jacksonville University, both located in Jacksonville, Florida.
Before his political career, Jones served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he served as the executive director of Mobile Community Action and was elected to the Mobile County Commission. He was eventually elected president of the Alabama County Commission Association.
Jones made history as the first African-American mayor of Mobile, Alabama, serving from September 2005 until August 2013. He ran on a platform of safety, efficient government, historic preservation, and bringing new employers to the city.
In addition to his mayoral duties, Jones has been involved in various committees throughout his political career. These include the House County and Municipal Government Committee, Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Mobile County Legislation Committee, Urban and Rural Development Committee, and the Reapportionment Committee.
Jones ran for re-election to the Alabama House of Representatives to represent District 99 and won in the general election on November 8, 2022. His dedication to public service continues to impact the lives of the residents of District 99 and the state of Alabama.
