Senator Shay Shelnutt

Shay Shelnutt is an American politician and a member of the Republican Party. He was born on September 21, 1967, in Birmingham, Alabama. He is currently serving as a member of the Alabama State Senate, representing the 17th District. He assumed office on November 5, 2014.

Shelnutt announced his run for the District 17 seat in the Alabama State Senate in 2014, which was being vacated by Scott Beason. He won the run-off election for the Republican primary on July 16. In May 2019, he voted to make abortion a crime at any stage in a pregnancy, with no exemptions for cases of rape or incest.

Shelnutt received his bachelor’s degree in business finance and his M.A.Ed. in math from the University of Montevallo. His professional experience includes teaching and coaching at the high school level, teaching at Jefferson State Community College, and working in real estate and business development.

In addition to his political career, Shelnutt competed on an episode of Family Feud that originally aired on October 12, 2015. He is married to Paige and they reside in Alabama.
