Gary Lee Stevens was born on August 21, 1941, in McMinnville, Oregon. He is a Republican member of the Alaska Senate, representing the C District since his appointment in February 2003. Before this, he was a member of the Alaska House of Representatives from 2001 through 2003.

Stevens has held several significant positions in the Alaska Senate. He served as Senate Majority Leader from 2005 to 2008, and as President of the Senate from 2009 to 2012. He assumed the role of President of the Alaska Senate again on January 17, 2023.

In addition to his political career, Stevens has an impressive academic background. He earned a B.A. from Linfield College in 1959, an M.F.A. from the University of Oregon in 1961, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 1982. He also holds a Leadership Certificate from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, which he earned in 2006 and 2018.

Stevens has also served as a professor at the University of Alaska for 25 years. His contributions extend beyond academia and politics. He has been a member of the Council on State Governments, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, and the Alaska Conference of Mayors. He has also served on the board of directors of the Alaska Municipal League.

Before his political career, Stevens served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970, reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He has also served as mayor of the Kodiak Island Borough, mayor of the City of Kodiak, president of the local school board, and presiding officer of the Borough Assembly.
