Representative Marcelino Quiñonez
Marcelino Quiñonez is an American politician, playwright, and activist currently serving as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives from the 11th district. He assumed office on January 9, 2023, serving alongside Oscar De Los Santos. Before this, he served in the Arizona House of Representatives from the 27th district from December 16, 2021, to January 9, 2023, alongside Reginald Bolding.
Quiñonez was born in Durango, Mexico, and raised in San Jose, California. After graduating from South Mountain High School, he pursued higher education at Arizona State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Fine Arts in theatre. During his time at the university, he studied under Marshall W. Mason.
In addition to his political career, Quiñonez has made significant contributions to the field of drama. He has worked as a drama teacher at the Arizona School for the Arts and served on the governing board of the Roosevelt Elementary School District. In 2018, he co-authored “Dear Senator,” a play starring and co-written by former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods. He also wrote and starred as Che Guevara in “El Che.”
Quiñonez’s career also includes roles as the director of educational outreach and partnerships at Arizona State University and the director of youth outreach at The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Arizona. His commitment to education and community service is evident in these roles.
In December 2021, Quiñonez was appointed to the Arizona House of Representatives by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, succeeding Diego Rodriguez. His current term ends on January 13, 2025. He ran for re-election to the Arizona House of Representatives to represent District 11 and won in the general election on November 8, 2022.
In 2023, Quiñonez served as House Minority Whip and helped pass a bipartisan budget, demonstrating his leadership skills and commitment to bipartisan cooperation.
