Representative Katie Stewart

Katie Stewart is a member of the Democratic Party and currently serves in the Colorado House of Representatives, representing District 59. She assumed office on January 8, 2025, and her current term will conclude on January 13, 2027.

Katie Stewart is a fourth-generation Durangoan whose life and career reflect a deep commitment to the people and communities of Southwest Colorado. Born in San Francisco, California, Stewart later settled in Durango, where she has raised her family and built her professional and civic life. She graduated from Bellevue East High School before embarking on a career in advocacy and public service. Stewart’s personal and professional journey has been shaped by her dedication to ensuring that rural and diverse communities have a strong voice in state government.

Before her election to the Colorado House of Representatives, Stewart served on the Durango School District 9-R Board of Education, representing District D. In this role, she worked to strengthen public education, advocate for teachers, and ensure that students had access to the resources they needed to succeed. Her leadership on the school board reflected her belief that education is the cornerstone of opportunity and empowerment, and it provided her with valuable experience in governance and policymaking.

In November 2024, Stewart was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives, succeeding Barbara Hall McLachlan in District 59. The district covers Archuleta, La Plata, and San Juan counties, as well as most of Montezuma County. These areas face unique challenges related to rural development, housing affordability, education, and environmental sustainability. She serves on the Agriculture, Water & Natural Resources Committee, the Education Committee, and the Health & Human Services Committee. Stewart has already sponsored legislation such as the Microgrid Community Resilience Grant Program, reflecting her commitment to renewable energy and community resilience.

Stewart’s personal life is deeply rooted in Durango, where she and her husband Dan are raising their five children.
