Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis
Sonya Jaquez Lewis is an American politician serving as a member of the Colorado Senate from the 17th district. She is a member of the Democratic Party and resides in Lafayette, Colorado. She assumed office on January 13, 2021, and her current term ends on January 8, 2025.
Before her current tenure, she served in the Colorado House of Representatives, representing the 12th district in Boulder County. She was succeeded by Tracey Bernett in this role. Her predecessor in the 17th district was Mike Foote.
Sonya Jaquez Lewis was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1981. She was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma and on the board of directors of WXYC.
Her career experience includes working as the Medicaid pharmacy director for Colorado Access. Lewis has served on the Boulder County Board of Health and as president of Out Boulder.
In terms of committee assignments, during 2023-2024, Lewis was assigned to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, Senate Local Government Committee, and the Transportation and Energy Committee. During 2021-2022, she was assigned to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and the Senate State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee. During 2019-2020, she was assigned to the Health and Insurance Committee, State, Civic, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Colorado Health Insurance Exchange Oversight Committee.
Lewis ran for election to the Colorado State Senate to represent District 17 and won in the general election on November 3, 2020. She defeated Matthew Menza and Andrew O’Connor in the general election for Colorado State Senate District 17.
