Representative Yvonne Hinson
Yvonne Hayes Hinson is an American politician who currently serves as the representative for Florida House of Representatives District 21 as a member of the Democratic Party. She was elected to the State House in 2020 and assumed office on November 8, 2022. She endorsed Charlie Crist for the 2022 Florida gubernatorial election.
On April 21, 2022, Hinson attempted to stage a sit-in demonstration to prevent a vote on Florida’s congressional district maps. Opponents of the tactic compared her actions to an insurrection. The demonstration was ultimately unsuccessful.
In the 2018 Florida’s 3rd Congressional District Primary Election, Yvonne Hayes Hinson received 31,655 votes, which was 59.5% of the total votes. In the 2018 Florida’s 3rd Congressional District General Election, she received 129,880 votes, which was 42.4% of the total votes.
In the Florida House of Representatives District 21 Democratic Primary, Yvonne Hayes Hinson received 16,208 votes, which was 60.2% of the total votes.
Yvonne Hayes Hinson was born and lives in Gainesville, Florida. She earned a B.A. and M.A. in education from the University of Florida in 1971 and 1972, respectively. Her career experience includes working as an educator. Hinson has served as the president of the University of Florida Black Alumni Association, the membership chair of the Alachua County Democratic Executive Committee, and the finance chair of the Gainesville Housing Authority Governing Board.
