Senator Gail Davenport was sworn into the state Senate in 2007, representing Senate District 44, which currently includes portions of Clayton and DeKalb counties. Senator Davenport is a member of the Senate Appropriations, Natural Resources and the Environment, State Institutions and Property, Urban Affairs, and Retirement Committees.

Senator Gail Davenport was sworn into the state Senate in 2007, representing Senate District 44, which currently includes portions of Clayton and DeKalb counties. Senator Davenport is a member of the Senate Appropriations, Natural Resources and the Environment, State Institutions and Property, Urban Affairs, and Retirement Committees.

Senator Davenport is a member of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, Georgia Legislative Women’s Caucus, Working Families Agenda Caucus, WILL/Women Legislators’ Lobby, National Black Caucus of State Legislators, National Organization of Black Elected Legislators, and served as the Chairwoman of the Clayton County Legislative Delegation for the 2013-2014 term.

She is a graduate of Spelman College, America’s oldest historically black college for women, a life member of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College, recipient of the 2008 Merit Award by the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College, received the 2002 Spelman College Board of Trustees Community Service Award, and the Atlanta Chapter’s 2001 Outstanding Alumna Award.

Senator Davenport has been a life-long advocate of education. In September 1997, she established the Henry and Clara Dixon Education Fund in honor of her maternal grandparents. The fund helps students purchase books while attending college. She also founded COLLEGE BOUND, a residential summer program that exposes high school students to the college experience and encourages their pursuit of higher education.

She was a delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Charlotte, NC, pledged to President Barack Obama, a delegate in the 2008 DNC in Denver, CO, pledged to Senator Barack Obama, a delegate to the 2004 DNC in Boston, MA, pledged to Senator John Kerry, and the 1988 DNC in Atlanta, pledged to Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

Senator Davenport is presently a real estate professional with Success Atlanta Real Estate and Investment having worked in the real estate industry for three decades. She has conducted workshops on home ownership, for she believes in “democracy in housing” and that every citizen deserves to experience the American dream of home ownership. Senator Davenport has conducted Home Foreclosure seminars and worked with HUD certified counselors to assist homeowners in foreclosure prevention.
