State Representative Penny Houston (R-Nashville) has been serving the citizens of House District 170, which includes Berrien and Cook counties and portions of Tift County, since her first election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1997. She has distinguished herself as a tireless advocate for her district and the economic development of rural Georgia.

In the Georgia House of Representatives, Rep. Houston serves as chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Economic Development, overseeing state budget funds for various departments and commissions. She also serves on several other committees, including Ways & Means, Banks & Banking, Economic Development & Tourism, Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight, and Appropriations. Additionally, she is a part of the House Rural Development Council.

Beyond her roles in the House, Rep. Houston has worked on special committees during previous legislative terms and serves as the chairman of the Southern Legislative Conference Fiscal Affairs and Government Operations Committee, among other roles.

In her district, Rep. Houston is an active member of the Nashville United Methodist Church and the Nashville Woman’s Club. She is also involved with the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes and serves on the Advisory Board of the Atlanta Speech School.

Raised in Leary, Georgia, Rep. Houston has made Nashville her home for nearly 50 years. She is a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and the University of Georgia. She enjoys spending time with her family, which includes her three children and six grandchildren.
