Shelly Hutchinson, born Rachelle Dinet Hutchinson on December 9, 1971, is an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party. She was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, in a Catholic home. Her family and faith instilled in her the values of honesty, commitment, and leadership at a young age.

Hutchinson received her bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Louisiana State University and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Georgia. After her education, she moved to Gwinnett County in 1995 and has resided there since.

Before entering politics, Hutchinson worked for the Fulton County Division of Family and Child Services. She later started her own small business, The Social Empowerment Center. Her career also includes serving as an adjunct professor with the University of Georgia, a contractor/trainer with the Center for the Support of Families, and a caseworker with the Georgia Department of Human Services.

In 2018, Hutchinson ran for an open Georgia House of Representative seat in House District 107. During the campaign, she was one of a handful of state legislature candidates in Georgia to be endorsed by former President Barack Obama. She defeated Ken Montano in the Democratic primary and went on to defeat Republican Janet Mihoci in the 2018 midterm general election. Hutchinson is the first member of the Democratic Party to win the district since Nikki Randal in 2002.

She assumed office on January 14, 2019, serving the 107th District until 2023. From 2023 onwards, she has been serving the 106th District. Her tenure has seen her assigned to various committees, including the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee, Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications Committee, Juvenile Justice Committee, and the Regulated Industries Committee.

Shelly Hutchinson continues to serve her constituents with dedication and commitment, contributing to the betterment of her community and the state of Georgia.
