Senator Chuck Winder
Chuck Winder is an American politician and a member of the Republican Party. He currently serves as the president pro tempore of the Idaho Senate, a position he assumed on December 1, 2020. Prior to this, he served as the Majority Leader of the Idaho Senate from September 21, 2017, to December 1, 2020.
Born on November 21, 1945, in Ontario, Oregon, Winder attended the College of Idaho, where he received a bachelor’s degree in political science and pre-law. He served in the United States Navy for four years on active duty as a naval aviator and for eight years on inactive reserve.
Winder is also a businessman, with a career in commercial real estate brokerage. He ran for the Republican nomination for Governor of Idaho in 1994, securing 13.5% of the vote. He has served on the Boise City Design Review Committee and the Boise Planning and Zoning Commission, and is a former member of the Ada County Highway District Commission.
In 2003, Winder ran for mayor of Boise, Idaho, but was defeated by David H. Bieter. From 2005 through 2008, he was a co-chair of the Treasure Valley’s Coalition for Regional Public Transportation. In 2008, the coalition merged with the statewide Moving Idaho Forward organization.
Winder has represented two districts in the Idaho State Senate. He first represented the 14th district from 2008 to 2012, and since 2012, he has been representing the 20th district. He has been re-elected several times, most recently on November 8, 2022. His current term ends on December 1, 2024.
Throughout his tenure, Winder has served on numerous committees, including the Senate State Affairs Committee, the Transportation Committee, the Education Committee, and the Governor’s Housing Committee. He was also a former chairman of the Idaho Transportation Board and a co-chair of the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) Transportation Committee.
Winder is married to Dianne Winder, and the couple has two children. He is a lifetime member of the United States Navy League and has served as the Vice President of the Ore-Ida Council, Boy Scouts of America, for four years. He has also been involved with the Boise Metro Economic Development Council, the Children’s Home Society of Idaho, and Junior Achievement of Idaho, where he served as a former president.
