Representative Soñia Galaviz
Soñia R. Galaviz is a distinguished member of the Idaho House of Representatives, representing District 16A. She assumed office on December 1, 2022, and her current term ends on December 1, 2024. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Born and raised in the Silver Valley region of Idaho, Galaviz is the daughter of immigrants from Mexico. She has a rich educational background, with a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction, all from Boise State University. Her degrees were earned in 2002, 2005, and 2020 respectively.
Galaviz’s career experience includes working as a teacher. Outside of politics, she is a teacher at Garfield Elementary School in Boise, Idaho. She has a strong emphasis on STEM education and bilingual education in her teaching and academic pursuits.
Over the years, Galaviz has been recognized for her contributions to education and her community. She was named Boise State University Distinguished Alumni in 2021. In the same year, the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights honored her as the Idaho Human Rights Educator of the Year. Earlier, in 2017, she received the National Education Association Foundation Awards for Teaching Excellence, being named National Teacher of the Year. She was also the recipient of the Industry’s Excellent Educators Dedicated to STEM (INDEEDS) Award in 2016.
Galaviz has two children, MacKenzie and Max. As a representative, she serves on several committees, including Education, Local Government, and Resources & Conservation.
