She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Duke University in 1997 and later obtained a Master of Education (MEd) from DePaul University in 2004.

Deering’s career began as a science teacher, where she taught elementary school students in Chicago. Her dedication to education and her desire to make a difference in the lives of young people led her to become a small business owner. She operated a tutoring and test prep location of the educational franchise Huntington Learning Center in her hometown of Decatur, Illinois. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as she served on the Mt. Zion Community Unit School District’s school board and volunteered as the Chair of the Decatur Public Schools Foundation.

In addition to her work in education, Deering has been actively involved in various community organizations. She served as the Board President for Northeast Community Fund, a social service center in Decatur that focuses on uplifting families by compassionately connecting them with resources and services. Deering has also been a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program since 2017, demonstrating her commitment to supporting and guiding young people in her community.

Deering’s dedication to public service led her to run for office, and she was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives, representing District 88. She assumed office on January 8, 2025, and her current term ends on January 13, 2027. As a state legislator, Deering represents parts of DeWitt, Macon, McLean, and Piatt counties in central Illinois. Her legislative priorities include improving education, supporting small businesses, and advocating for community resources and services.
