Mike Petersen, whose full name is Soren M. Petersen, was born on October 5, 1960. He is an American Republican politician who has been serving in the Kansas Senate, representing the 28th district since 2005.

Petersen’s professional background is as an industrial electrician from Wichita. He is married to Shelby Petersen.

Over the years, Petersen has served on several legislative committees. These include the Joint Committee on Information Technology, where he served as chair, the Transportation committee, also as chair, and the Utilities committee, where he served as vice-chair. He has also been a part of the Joint Committee on Kansas Security, the Clean Power Plan Implementation Study Committee, the Judiciary committee, the Telecommunications Study Committee, and the Assessment and Taxation committee.

In the 2012 elections, Petersen was unopposed in the Republican primary, winning 2,632 votes. He defeated the Democratic nominee Keith Humphrey by a margin of 9,853 to 7,957 in the general election, which was a 52.7- to 47.3-percent margin.

In the 2016 elections, Petersen faced Jo Hillman in the Republican primary, winning with a margin of 74% to 25% of the vote. In the general election, he defeated Keith Humphrey once again, winning by a margin of 9,915 to 9,353 votes.
