Representative Rick James

Rick James is a member of the Republican Party and currently serves in the Kansas House of Representatives, representing District 4. He assumed office on January 13, 2025, and his current term will conclude on January 11, 2027.

James was born and raised in La Cygne, Kansas, where he attended Prairie View High School, graduating in 1981. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, beginning a distinguished military career that spanned three decades. During his service, James participated in multiple major operations, including the Gulf War, Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, and the Iraq War. He also served in diplomatic roles at U.S. embassies and worked as a Marine Drill Instructor. Over the course of his career, James rose to the rank of Sergeant Major and was awarded honors such as the Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit before retiring in 2011.

After his military service, James transitioned into civilian life by establishing himself in business and community leadership. He became the owner of an auctioneering service and worked in real estate, applying his organizational and leadership skills to entrepreneurial ventures. His professional background in both business and military service provided him with a strong foundation for public office, emphasizing discipline, accountability, and service to others.

James entered politics in 2024, running for the Kansas House of Representatives to represent District 4. He succeeded Trevor Jacobs, who previously held the seat. His campaign focused on conservative principles, support for veterans, and strengthening Kansas communities. Upon his election, James began his legislative career in January 2025, marking the start of his tenure in state government.

In the Kansas House, James has served on several committees, including Veterans and Military, Insurance, Elections, and Corrections and Juvenile Justice. He has also been a member of the Joint Committee on Kansas Security. His leadership role as chair of the Veterans and Military Committee reflects his commitment to supporting service members and veterans, drawing on his own extensive military background to inform policy decisions. Among his sponsored bills is HB2029, which designated a portion of K-5 highway as the Representative Marvin S. Robinson II Memorial Highway and redesignated a portion of the Harry Darby Memorial Highway for Interstate 635. Outside of his political career, James remains active in his local community. He resides in La Cygne, Kansas, with his wife, Allyson V. James.
