Olson began his political career as a Representative in the Kansas House of Representatives. He represented the 26th district from 2005 to 2010. During his tenure, he served as the Majority Whip, demonstrating his leadership skills and commitment to his party and constituents.

In 2011, Olson was appointed to the Kansas Senate following Karin Brownlee’s nomination to serve as Kansas Secretary of Labor. He represents the 23rd district and has been serving in this capacity since his appointment. His current term ends on January 13, 2025.
