Representative Susan Ruiz
Susan Ruiz is an American politician who was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in the 2018 elections. She represents the 23rd House District as a member of the Democratic Party. Openly lesbian, she was elected alongside Brandon Woodard as the state’s first-ever LGBT state legislators.
She was born in Houston, Texas and earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in social work from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. Her professional experience includes working as an emergency services manager from 1996 to 2001, as a service coordinator at the Wyandot Center from 2011 to 2013, and as intensive community services team leader at Truman Medical Center beginning in 2013.
In the 2019 session, she was a member of the Children and Seniors Committee, the Social Services Budget Committee, and the Veterans and Military Committee. In the 2023-2024 session, she was assigned to the Health and Human Services Committee, Social Services Budget Committee, Veterans and Military Committee, Child Welfare System Oversight, and Robert G. (Bob) Bethell Joint Committee on Home and Community Based Services and KanCare Oversight.
She ran for re-election to the Kansas House of Representatives to represent District 23 and won in the general election on November 8, 2022. Her current term ends on January 13, 2025.
